A sunny Autumn day in New Hampshire makes it pretty easy to get your rear in gear. The weather and the fantastic views from Gould Hill Farm in Contoocook surely added to the draw for the people who came out to support the 2016 Get Your Rear in Gear 5K Run/Walk. The even raises funds and awareness for colon screening. As a two-time colon cancer survivor, this event and its purpose mean quite a bit to me.
This is the second year I’ve volunteered my photography services. Both years we’ve been blessed with gorgeous weather for the run and walk through the orchards. Naturally, the fun of the event is followed by some delicious apple cider donuts and apple picking.
Smiles and laughter radiated through the event, but there were a few tears as well. Some people there are in the middle of their fight against colon cancer and others participate in memory of a loved one who lost the struggle. They all want to stress the importance of screening in making better outcomes. Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death, but survival rates are high with early diagnosis through regular screening. A scheduled colonoscopy caught my second bout of colon cancer before it had a chance to spread. Thankfully, about 65% of Americans are up to date on their colon cancer screening. We need to get that higher, though.
If you’re 50 or older, please schedule a colon cancer screening right away. No matter what age you are, please plan on joining us next year to support this terrific event!
