Dancing in the Rain: Rainy Day Urban Portraits

By July 18, 2014Dancing, Fun, Portraits

What do you do on a rainy day? You go outside to take dancing in the rain portraits, naturally.

We wanted to work with a couple of ideas: the scene from Singin’ in the Rain with Gene Kelly and the quote, “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, but learning to dance in the rain.” Although the main focus was getting shots of being happy and dancing in the rain, I also wanted to get one with a sad or depressed feel.

A key element was keeping crucial equipment dry. Plastic bags and rubber bands worked for the off-camera strobes and a rain sleeve protected the camera and lens. I’m happy overall with the results, but I was actually disappointed that it wasn’t raining harder. The lighter rain didn’t get quite the effect I wanted. I could add some rain in Photoshop, but that doesn’t look quite the same to me.

I’ll certainly be going out in the rain again to get more shots.
