Everyone likes a scrumptious dinner at a nice restaurant with their family on their birthday. When a few dozen of your friends and colleagues join in the celebration, well, that takes it up a notch or three.
Gary thought he was headed out to a pleasant evening with his family at the Granite Restaurant, part of the Centennial Inn in Concord, NH. When he walked into one of the function rooms, though, a boisterous “Surprise!” from his friends greeted him. A huge smile lit up his face as he went around and greeted everyone with hugs and handshakes. The cozy room and soft keyboard music made a nice setting for the celebration. His family had decorated the tables with photos from his younger days and his favorite treats – Necco Wafers, Good & Plenty, and nonpareils.
After the hors d’oeuvres, his daughters sang a popular Oldies song in which they’d changed the lyrics to talk about Gary and his life. Another group of friends also sang a couple of songs about him that filled the room with laughter. More friends reminisced about their years together and one read a poem she wrote for Gary. When the dinner buffet was finished, Gary and his wife, Carol, cut his birthday cake. Not only was this Gary’s birthday, but it was also their anniversary.
I enjoyed being part of the happy celebration and wish Gary and his family the best of wishes for the years to come.
